Artist Info:
Since the release of his first full length album, Irreversible, Grieves has been called a breath of fresh air, a breakaway phenomenon, and a lyrical mastermind. Touring constantly, Grieves stunned crowds all over the country with his distinctive voice, lyrical precision, and unparalleled style. Following Grieves' encouraging reception and a stint on the CMJ Top 20 Hip Hop charts, fans speculated on what would be next for the emergent artist.
88 Keys and Counting is the response. A joint venture with friend and renowned Seattle based producer, Budo, 88 Keys is a matured record with themes that will challenge fans old and new alike. Armed with a distinct and fluid sound that will delight your ears and rouse your cerebrum, Grieves' second effort is not to be overlooked.

Underground9 Overview:
This album incredibly reminds me of Blu & Exile's '07 album "Below The Heavens", two unknown artists teamed up to craft an amazing mixture of rich beats, unique rapping style and honest lyrics.
Take out the instrumentals and you're left with 11 songs, 2 of which have no rapping in it, that's right, Grieves sings and he's damn good at it too. "October In The Graveyard" is one of the two, took me a while to appreciate it but the beautiful beat and deep harmonizing made it into one of my favorites.
This is a very unique release, Grieves is nothing like what we're used to hear, starting from his weird persona and geeky looks to what you would consider immature acting, but he doesn't try to be what he's not, his lyrics express that, and he does well in approaching this subject in the laid back "Identity Cards".
No need to look for highlights in this album, there's no fillers nor bad songs, my favorite is the dark lullaby "Kings", amazing beat wrapped in the abstract lyrics. I just love the mature metaphors, the meaningful subjects, the visuals he describes, this album is definitely my favorite of 2008, it has everything I could ever ask for.
The piano has 88 keys and each key differs in sound, Grieves and Budo managed to expand into more than just that, it's uniqueness is what makes "88 Keys & Counting" a classic.

Underground9 Overview:
This is the debut album from underground rapper-producer Kev Brown.
I don't particularly like this album, i do find it good and very appealing to the underground listeners but it's one of those albums that i forget about after a few enjoyable listens.
The production is very soft and jazzy on most tracks, while some are way too repetitive and dull, still i don't find it disappointing at all, but it lacks the few shocking beats i would expect from most albums bearing such fame.
I'm glad to say that Kev did a better job on the lyrics than on the beats, some tracks display true lyrical talent, unfortunately the rapper's flow is not impressive, the overly calm rapping often gets boring and way too forgettable.
I enjoy a couple of songs at most, the beautiful "Albany" is a true highlight in my opinion, though other tracks may contain richer lyrics none of them captured my attention.
Overall the album is pretty good, it didn't amaze me nor does it contain particular highlights that keep me listening to it, but i know a lot of people who enjoyed this so i still recommend you the download.

Underground9 Overview:

Pacific Division (Pac Div for short) is a hip-hop trio hailing from Los Angeles comprised of brothers Likewise and Mibbs and emcee B. Young. The Sealed For Freshness Blendtape is their debut blendtape (not a mixtape nor an album) and shows a promising future for Pac Div.

In the 'Sealed For Freshness Blendtape' Pac Div spits over classic old school instrumentals such as 'Mass Appeal', 'Passin' Me By', ''93 Til Infinity' and 'Bonita Applebum'. That doesn't mean that there aren't original production on this blendtape. The tracks 'Grown Kids Syndrome', 'Act Like You Chillin', and 'Flexin'.

The three emcees sure don't fail in the lyrical portion of the blendtape. On the track Put Me Own, which is Pac Div's rhymes over A Tribe Called Quest's classic instrumental of 'Bonita Applebum', emcee Likewise spits:

"Man these niggas can't rap but,

nowadays you get signed for if you wack

so let me rap about how I'm pushing crack or

how I'm getting stacks oh I think I like that

Or maybe I can rap about rims

Yeah, black people love those

and we can shoot a video with hoes

dancing by the poles while taking off their clothes"

Highlights on this blendtape include 'Grown Kid Syndrome', 'Put Me On', and 'Passin' Me By'. This is definantly something that you don't want to miss and it is worth the download and so will their album 'The F.A.T. LP' when it is released later on this year.

Underground9 Overview:
This is the debut album by Canadian Hip Hop producer Marco Polo.
What you should know first is that Marco Polo doesn't rap, instead he managed to get some of the biggest names in Hip Hop's underground scene on this album and most do an outstanding job on the rich Polo beats.
What you probably have already heard is the single "Nostalgia" that features legend Masta Ace, the track has a beautiful sample, Ace doesn't disappoint and his verses stand out greatly, i was pleased to see Ace back, the video was a nice surprise as well.
Overall my personal favorite is "Marquee", the incredible beat is made of an abstract sample, the catchy sound is richened by O.C.'s slow rapping that display a long mastered delivery.
Copywrite manages to stand up to the other most successful artists on "Get Busy", a great flow that impressed me, the strings in the background perfectly blend with Copywrite's voice.
What really disappointed me is how some high profile artists came out with poor lyrics, Buckshot greatly disappoints in "Go Around", while some beats like "Low Budget Allstars" are poor and stripped down.
Every release has ups and downs, you will find some songs on Port Authority incredible, while other ones will make your listen less enjoyable, a lot of people consider this the best release of 2007, it's definitely a great album worth checking out.

Underground9 Overview:
This is a collaboration album of Sick Jacken of Psycho Realm and DJ Muggs of Cypress Hill.
Many of you should know Muggs thanks to his 2005 collaboration album with the legend GZA, some know him from his old Cypress Hill days, while Sick Jacken is a less known figure he does his best on this release that unfortunately passed almost unnoticed.
The album is very dark as it follows the complex story, makes me think of an old horror movie, a work of a genius but so dull in it's ways.
Muggs' beats are what will probably impress you the most, a work in minor with sounds that give the exact feeling to Jacken's lyrics.

"I always wondered what death would be like
especially when Duke died and came back, and said he didn't see light
was that a glimpse into eternal sleep, no afterlife
or promise of hell, the mystery as dark as the night
all signs told me my days were numbered walking the earth
and i go out just as bloody as i did on my birth"

By now you might have a wrong idea, the album is not close to the horrorcore genre, such lyrics and storytelling are what makes it different, tracks like "Mask And The Assassin" are accompanied by curious beats and follow a story in it's lyrics.
This release deserves more attention than the one received, definitely one of the best 10 albums of 2007.

Underground9 Overview:

Mad Skillz's debut album released in 1996. In today's hip hop world, he is famous for doing the critically acclaimed 'Rap Ups', now under the name Skillz.
This debut album is what you can expect and even more from this great rapper. First off, the lyrics. On this album, Mad Skillz sound like Big L on some tracks, just without the gangsta factor. On tracks such as "VA In The House" and "Tip Of The Tongue", Skillz shows off his real lyrical talent. He even holds his own with hip-hop legends such as Q-Tip and Large Professor on "Extra Abstract Skillz".
The only real complaint with the lyrics on the album are the choruses. Frankly, most of the choruses are unoriginal and just down-right stupid such as:

"Floatin lyrics from the Tip Of My Tongue

I (swing), i (sway), I (swung)"

Not only that, but most of the choruses, although short, repeat 4 times after every verse. Not only is it frustrating, it makes you want to switch to the next track, only to run into the same exact dilemma.

The production isn't really a problem as it include Large Professor, Jay Dee, and Buckwild at their prime, which makes me wonder how Skillz got  those great underground producers. Even the beats produced by Mad Skillz aren't bad, all together the album has great beats.

Underground9 Overview:
This is the debut album from New York underground Hip Hop group Non Phixion, it features production by legends such as DJ Premier, Pete Rock and Large Professor, as well as group affiliate Necro, JuJu of The Beatnuts, Dave One and T-Ray.
Non Phixion was composed of rappers Ill Bill, Sabac Red, Goretex and DJ Eclipse.
This is by many considered an underground classic, it's definitely a very impressive release but various ups and downs are not classic material.
Let's start with what i consider the best parts of the album, well besides an amazing production on most of the album the flow, delivery and lyrics are outstanding, Ill Bill is the most present on the album, his starting verse on "Black Helicopters" is my favorite one, below is a fragment.

"Had the time of his life; a capitalist with a communist wife
Started to fight and did to cats what God did to Christ
Hardly the type to give garbage advice; he was larger than life
He'd penetrate the roof of your car with a spike"

Sabac Red featured the less trough the album, but him and Goretex can easily stand up to Bill's lyrics coming with aggressive verses along with a nice delivery, Sabac's verse on "The C.I.A. Is Trying To Kill Me" is outstanding, while Goretex shines on the beautiful "Say Goodbye to Yesterday", my second favorite song on the album.

"I move through the projects, lights, rhythm and smoke
Idiom quotes, somebody said religion's a joke
Buried my man at 18, the cancer took him in months
He died before he lived, but once gone I felt touched
My old earth followed in '91, 6 months apart
Project stress, blackouts, and walks in the park
People change, cause when I look back I feel strange
Goin through old flicks, our days numbered, turnin the page
I can't go back, we learn to live with hate and respect
A tale from the heart prevail through the pain and regret"

Some of the darkest material, aggressive rapping and dark beats are the exact opposite of what you'll find on a mainstream release, if you're familiar with Hip Hop's underground you will definitely enjoy this album.

Underground9 Overview:
I was very surprised by this debut, the dark production brings classical sounds to the listener, while the lyrics are beautiful in it's complexity, the major subject of this record is the questions about life, disease, war, murderous minds and expresses the hatred for what mankind has become.
Now you probably don't know much about S.E.L.F, i too am new to their music, so we gotta start with the Lotus Tribe.
Lotus Tribe met as troubled high schoolers with a mutual concern for the lack of a real hip hop scene in San Antonio, TX. Four years of cultivation and regional acclaim has led to the "Self Expression is Living Free" (S.E.L.F.) project and "The Art & War of Misanthropic Philanthropy" which features Lotus Tribe's MCs The Reason, Trinit-I and Aura.
My favorite track is "Aether" that lyrically amazed me, the beautiful strings beat made it one of my favorite tracks of 2007.
The only thing that disappointed me is the artists' flow on some tracks.
This is definitely worth downloading, this album is one of it's kind.

Underground9 Overview:
This is the debut album by rapper Hell Razah, an underground gem that passed almost unnoticed, it features production from MF Doom, Dev 1, Shuko, Fabrizio Sotti and Wu-Tang affiliate producers Bronze Nazareth and 4th Disciple.
Hell Razah comes up with brilliant lyrics trough the album, this record reminds me of Bronze Nazareth's debut, great mood and guest appearances.
"Los Pepes" is one of my favorite tracks on the record, it's not great lyrically but flow and beat are excellent, the classic Bronze Nazareth beat contains a beautiful harmonious sample.
"Lost Ark" is probably the best track on the album, an amazing beat accompanied by the rapper's great flow and lyrics, the album is mostly a treat for the ears as the production is full of old samples and jazz instruments.
This is definitely in the top ten albums of 2007, enjoy your listen.

Underground9 Overview:
This is the second studio album for rapper Lupe Fiasco, a very successful release with 198,470 sales in its second week.
I'll be honest, i never liked Lupe Fiasco, lyrically he's brilliant but his songs just don't sound like solid Hip Hop tracks, his voice is pretty annoying and usually his hooks are terrible.
What i expected was an album full of pop hooks and slow singing, and that is exactly what i got, but after a first disappointing listen i started paying attention to the lyrics and accepted Lupe's incredible lyrical skills over the rest.
The production on the album is mostly very good, piano play and strings are very used trough the album so i got nothing to complain, no candy beat can appear from those instruments.
My favorite tracks are "Hip-Hop Saved My Life", "Streets On Fire", "Little Weapon" and "Intruder Alert", all of them contain corny hooks and excessive harmony but this makes them very enjoyable and relaxing as the addictive single "Superstar".
I'm glad that a talented rapper like Lupe Fiasco gained mainstream attention, let's hope his next album won't disappoint.
